Red star fans will enjoy coming back to this one again and again. Dubbed the Garnet Star by none other than William Herschel, it is bright and relatively easy to find, located between Alderamin and Zeta Cep.

An M2 supergiant and semiregular variable star, the Garnet Star varies between 3.43 and 5.10 magnitude over the course of 730 days. The brightness of this star changes as it pulsates. At a distance of about 5300 light years, it must be extremely bright intrinsically.

To my eye the Garnet star looks distinctly orange red.
